Creating a Simple WordPress Blog: Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
It’s been more than 10 years since I’ve been Blogging. Yes. It’s good to brag about it. I mean, why Not?
And I’ve come across a lot of folks who have expressed a keen interest in Blogging as well. Many of these include people who write way better than me. And yet, the whole exercise of Blogging, rather, getting started with a Blog, seems too taxing or just simply overwhelming for some.
So, I thought, I’ll create a very simple, step-by-step guide on Creating a Blog. How to just create a blog where you can write. The idea is to help people create a WordPress blog!
There are a lot more you can do with your blog, but in this particular post, I’m limiting it to just creating a basic Blog. Also, I’ll be using WordPress for this purpose, but you can use a lot of different platforms as well.
So, let’s get started!
Where to start?
Go to WordPress.com and click on ‘Get Started’.
Step 1: Enter Details of the Blog you want to create
Enter the name of your Blog, Type of Blog, etc.
Do note that WordPress mentions blogs as sites, and so, please don’t get confused. For our purpose, it’s all the same.
In the section where it asks, ‘How comfortable are you in creating a blog?’ just click on 1. I mean you’re reading a beginners’ guide, right? 🙂
Step 2: Adding the address of your Blog
Now, its time to select the Address of your Blog.
Be careful in selecting this address, as you won’t be regularly changing this. The address is nothing but the URL which others are going to use to land on your website. Since you’re going to start a free blog on WordPress, your Blog Address should look something like this:
Xyz.wordpress.com
You can change the XYZ into something you like. Don’t click on other options, as most of these are paid ones. I’ve added, ‘Creatingasimpleblog.wordpress.com’ for this exercise.
Select the blog address, in this case, ‘creatingasimpleblog.wordpress.com’, marked as free.
Step 3: Selecting the Free WordPress Plan
You’ll next be moved to selecting WordPress based plans. Yes, WordPress wants to sell stuff to you, but for now, you don’t need it.
Hence, ignore. Again, click on the ‘Start with Free’ option.
Step 4: Creating a WordPress Account
To use WordPress’s services, you’ll have to create an account on the site. Right? Just as you do for Facebook.
Add the relevant details here, and click on Continue!
You’re almost there!
(Just confirm your email ID by clicking on the link that WordPress sends to verify it’s you)
Final Step: Getting Access to your Blog
Voila! Your Blog has been created! Congratulations.
Sure, You’ll have to add Content now. But the basic structure, which overwhelms most of the folks, is ready.
On the left-hand side menu, you can see the option of Blog Post. Click on Add. And you’ll come across a dashboard, which asks a Title and a blank space to add content. There are of course other options available. But for now, just leave all of that. Simply add a title and write your content.
In case you don’t like this dashboard, write in a word file (or anywhere you want) and paste it here. Anything works.
There’ll be a Publish now button on the top-right corner. Click that and your First Post is now live.
Congratulations! You now have a Blog!
[We’ll cover other things you can do on the blog in detail later on this same post, that includes, selecting a theme a do and other customization you can do with your Blog]
